Grebe Aggression

01st May 2025
Like most waterfowl the confrontations are short and sharp when birds encroach on each others territories, crossing "invisible" boundaries on the lakes and ponds. The protagonist usually provides clear and visible signs of an impending attack / assault to its adversary and if these signs are ignored or escape in a timely fashion is not possible then the assault and resulting defence can be brutal even if it may only last for a few seconds.

Even during the courtship ritual of the Great Crested Grebes it is not uncommon for the male bird to break off from a session of head shaking and neck bending to launch an attack on another bird who has strayed to close, crossing one of those "invisible" boundaries on the lake known only to the Grebes.

Like duellists armed with daggers two Great Crested Grebe square up to each other.
