The Reds have arrived….

17th August 2022
It did not take long once a couple of feeders where put up, first come the small birds on a regular basis, and the squirrels are never usually far behind.

It has to be said that at the time of writing one has quite a poor tail and lots of patches of hair missing which at distance make it look like it has white markings, hopefully nothing more than a late moult, as otherwise it as lively as any Red Squirrel and certainly does not appear to be in poor health otherwise.

Autumn is fast approaching and it won’t be long until they both have their ear tufts, and if the feeding continues hopefully the numbers of squirrels increase.

They do provide good viewing from the house windows and are definitely getting bolder not bolting to the woods at every sound and movement from the house.

Four miles or so away, down at Conaglen House there is also a small population of Reds, quite often seen dicing with death as they dart across the single track road which leads down to Ardgour.

So among the finches which are mainly Chaffinch and Siskin the Red squirrels now have this area firmly on their daily schedule for a free breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Photo comment By Nicki Makris: I knew Conaglen had a small population, which apparently took root after the lockdowns. I am hoping the ones around Dalendrien will remain although a barn owl has taken up residence in the nesting box?
